This test guideline evaluates the impact of a substance on microorganisms found in the activated sludge of wastewater treatment facilities.     OECD 209 Introduction

    The Test Guideline aims to evaluate the impact of a substance on microorganisms found in the activated sludge of wastewater treatment facilities by tracking their respiration rate, specifically through oxygen consumption linked to carbon and/or ammonium oxidation. The findings from the test may also act as a benchmark for determining appropriate non-inhibitory concentrations of test substances for subsequent biodegradability assessments.

    Test procedure For obtaining EC and or NOEC values, six controls and five treatment concentrations in a geometric series with five replicates are recommended. In each test vessel, test mixtures containing water, synthetic sewage feed and the test substance are incubated at the pH of 7.5 ±0.5 and the temperature within 20±2°C under forced aeration to keep the dissolved oxygen concentration above 60-70% saturation.

    Specimen DetailsThis test is performed using at least three concentrations of the test substance, such as 10 mg/L, 100 mg/L, and 1000 mg/L. For each of these concentrations, measurements of total oxygen uptake occur when the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration is between 2 and 7 mg/L.

    Results and Interpretation of OECD 209

    At the end of this test, we can determine the percentage inhibition of the Respiration Rate of activated sludge mixed with the test substances compared to the control/ untreated sludge and get EC/or NOEC values.
