ASTM C33/C33M Standard Specification for Concrete Aggregates

ASTM C33 is a test method that determines the requirements for grading and quality of fine and coarse aggregates for use in concrete. Fine aggregate is composed of either natural or manufactured sand, or a combination of both. Fine aggregate is free of hazardous levels of organic contaminants. Gravel, crushed gravel, crushed stone, air-cooled blast furnace slag, crushed hydraulic-cement concrete, or a mixture of these constitute coarse aggregate. The ASTM C33 method is used by the contractor, concrete supplier, or buyer as a part of the purchase document. The results obtained through ASTM C33 method are specially used for quality control and specification purposes. ASTM C33 specimens must be solid and uniformly rectangular. Introduction to ASTM C33

ASTM C33/C33M-18 is a test method designed to determine the grading and quality requirements for using fine and coarse aggregates in concrete. Fine aggregate consists of natural sand or manufactured sand and is free of organic impurities. The coarse aggregate consists of gravel, crushed gravel, crushed stone, air-cooled blast furnace slag, and crushed hydraulic cement concrete. The results obtained through ASTM C33/C33M-18 test standard method are specially used for quality control and specification purposes. Requirements for grading and quality of fine and coarse aggregate, other than lightweight or heavyweight aggregate, are described in the ASTM C33M specification. Contractors, concrete suppliers, or other purchasers use the ASTM C33/C33M specification as part of their purchase document.

ASTM C33 test method is generally applicable to both fine and coarse aggregates and is used in project specifications for defining the quality of aggregates, the nominal maximum size of aggregates, and other specific grading requirements.

ASTM C33 Test Method

This specification utilizes grading and fineness modulus test, organic impurities test, effect of organic impurities on strength test, soundness test, clay lumps, and friable particles test, coal and lignite test, bulk density of slag test, abrasion of coarse aggregate test, reactive aggregate test, freezing and thawing test, and chert test method.

Test procedure for Fine AggregateThe sieve analysis of the fine aggregates is performed and it is checked for the relevant properties specified by the purchaser. The fineness modulus is determined and adjusted to be within the limit of 0.20. The fine aggregate is checked for impurities and freed from them. It is subjected to five cycles of soundness tests and the results of freezing and thawing tests are recorded.
Test procedure for Concrete AggregateCoarse aggregate is checked for meeting requirements of this specification and the deleterious alkali-aggregate reaction is determined. The properties of the concrete aggregate are accessed and subjected to testing for meeting the criteria set by the buyer.

ASTM C33 Specimens

Specimen detailsASTM C33 specimens must be solid and uniformly rectangular.
Specimen dimensionsThe general sample size for ASTM C33 is 75-μm.
Specimen preparationSpecimens are injection molded or cut from molded or extruded sheets or plates, or cut from molded or extruded shapes.

ASTM C33 Results

This test method determines the potential alkali reactivity, grading and fineness modulus, organic impurities, soundness, clay lumps, and friable particles, bulk density, abrasion, and specific gravity of coarse and fine aggregates to select them for their use in concrete.

Tests Related to ASTM C33
ASTM C332 is similar to ASTM C33. ASTM C332 test method covers the light weighted aggregates for use in concrete not exposed to the weather which can impact the thermal insulating property of the resulting concrete. Two general types of lightweight aggregate are the group I aggregates, which are prepared by perlite or vermiculite, and group II aggregates which are prepared by blast-furnace slag, clay, diatomite, fly ash, shale, or slate. The sieve size and the size of aggregates is expressed in inch-pound units.
