ASTM D792, ISO 1183 Density and Specific Gravity

ASTM D792 is a set of test methods that determines the density and specific gravity of solid plastics such as sheets, rods, tubes, or molded items. There are two test methods described in ASTM D792 standard test method: Test A for testing solid plastics in water and Test B for testing solid plastics in liquids other than water. ASTM D792 evaluates the physical changes in a plastic sample associated with the degree of uniformity compared to other samples and average density or specific gravity of larger samples or products in testing labs. Introduction to ASTM D792

ASTM D792 is a set of test methods designed to measure the specific gravity and density of plastics. There are two test methods described in the ASTM D792 standard test method: Test A for testing solid plastics in water and Test B for testing solid plastics in liquids other than water. The specific gravity and density of the solid help identify a material, follow physical changes in a sample, indicate the degree of uniformity among different sampling units, or indicate the average density of big-size items. The results obtained by ASTM D792 are specially used for quality control and specification purposes. ISO 1183 specifies methods A, B, and C for determining the density of non-cellular plastics in the form of void-free molded or extruded objects, and powders, flakes, and granules. Method A is the immersion method used for solid plastics (except for powders) in void-free form; Method B is the liquid pyknometer method, for particles, powders, flakes, granules, or small pieces of finished parts; and Method C is the titration method, for plastics in any void-free form. Method C given in ISO 1183 is applicable to void-free pellets.

ASTM D792 test method generally applies to solid plastics and can be used to determine strength-weight and cost-weight ratios. It also identifies the changes in the density of a single material due to localized differences in crystallinity, loss of plasticizer, absorption of solvent, or due to other causes. MaTestLab has the best network of testing labs in the USA to carry out ASTM D792 test for our clients.

ASTM D792 Test Method

This test method proceeds by determining the mass of a specimen of solid plastic in the air which is then immersed in a liquid and its mass upon immersion is calculated. The specific gravity or the relative density is also calculated. ASTM D792 test parameters, based on sample thickness, are support span, loading speed, and max deflection.

Test procedure AThis method tests the solid plastics in the water. The immersion vessel is mounted on the support and the suspended specimen is immersed in water at the temperature of 23±2 °C. It is ensured that the vessel does not touch the specimen or the sample holder. The bubbles are removed by rubbing them with a wire or by using a vacuum. The mass of the specimen is determined and compared with the weight of the sample holder immersed in water.
Test procedure BThis method tests the solid plastics in liquids other than water. The immersion vessel is mounted on the support and the suspended specimen is immersed in a liquid other than water. The temperature during the immersed weighing is the temperature of 23 ±0.5 °C. The bubbles are removed and the sample mass is determined.

ASTM D792 Specimens

Specimen detailsASTM D792 specimens must be solid such as sheets, rods, tubes, or molded items.
Specimen dimensionsThe volume of the sample shall not be less than 1 cm³ and the thickness should be at least 1 mm.
Specimen preparationSpecimens are injection molded or cut from molded or extruded sheets or plates.

ASTM D792 Results

This test method evaluates the specific gravity and density of the plastics along with the variations in specific gravity and density across various specimens. The specific gravity and density of the solid plastics vary with specimen depth, temperature, atmospheric conditions, and strain rate.

Tests related to ASTM D792
ISO 1183-1 test is similar to ASTM D792 but not equivalent. ASTM D792 test method provides more guidelines on sample weight and dimension whereas ISO 1183-1 allows testing at an additional temperature of 27±2 °C. ISO 1183-1 uses the immersion method, liquid pycnometer method, and titration method for the determination of the density of plastics.
