ASTM D412 Vulcanized Rubber and Thermoplastic Elastomers Tension

ASTM D412 test methods determine the tensile properties of vulcanized thermostat rubbers and thermoplastic elastomers. ASTM D412 methods are not applicable to hard and low elongation materials such as ebonite. ASTM D412 comprises Test Method A for Dumbbell and Straight Section Specimens and Test Method B for Cut Ring Specimens. Introduction to ASTM D412

ASTM D412 is a set of test methods designed to measure the tensile properties of vulcanized thermostat rubbers and thermoplastic elastomers. An index of the performance of rubber and elastomeric materials along with the quantitative measure of the elongation or change in length are provided by this test method. The results obtained are specially used for quality control and specification purposes. ASTM D412 comprises Test Method A for Dumbbell and Straight Section Specimens and Test Method B for Cut Ring Specimens. During its manufacture, an elastomeric material can be either a thermoplastic that exists in a solid state, or it could be a thermoset requiring vulcanization using sulfur. A successful ASTM D412 test gives ultimate tensile strength and elongation at break data along with Young’s modulus, offset yield, and the modulus of elasticity for elastomer specimens.

ASTM D412 test methods are generally applicable to thermostat rubbers and thermoplastic elastomers but not applicable to ebonite and similar hard, low-elongation materials. MaTestLab has the best network of testing labs in the USA to carry out ASTM D412 test for our clients.

ASTM D412 Test Method

This test method proceeds with preparing the sample and testing the specimens. The specimens are placed in the grips of the testing machine in such a way that the tension is uniformly distributed over the cross-section. The machine is then started and the distance between the benchmarks is noted. The force at the time of elongation and at the time of rupture is recorded. Spark mechanism, autographic mechanism or an extensometer is used to measure the elongation.

Test Method-AThis method is applicable for dumbbell and straight-section specimens. There are a total of six types of such specimens. The tensile set and set after the break are determined by accessing the distance between the benchmarks.
Test Method-BThis method is applicable for cut ring specimens. There are two cut ring specimens. The surface of the spindle is lubricated with mineral oil or silicone oil. The distance between the spindle centers is calculated and adjusted before and during the operation of the test machine. The elongation and tensile strength are recorded at rupture. For temperatures above room temperature, the specimens are preheated and cooled, which are then placed in the test chamber for measurements.

ASTM D412 Specimens

Specimen detailsASTM D412 specimens are in the shape of dumbbells, rings, or straight pieces of uniform cross-sectional area.
Specimen dimensionsThe size of the specimen type used will be determined by the material, test equipment, and the sample or piece available for test. The general sample thickness for ASTM D412 is 3.0 ± 0.3mm.
Specimen preparationSpecimens are injection molded or cut from molded or extruded sheets or plates.

ASTM D412 Results

This test method evaluates tensile properties such as tension, tensile stress, tensile strength, yield point, and the ultimate elongation of vulcanized rubber from the thermoplastic elastomers. Tensile properties are highly dependent on the material formulation and test conditions including variables such as test speed, temperature, humidity, specimen geometry, and pretest conditioning.

Tests Related to ASTM D412

ISO 37 is similar to the ASTM D412 test method. ISO specifies a method for determining the tensile stress/strain properties of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers. The properties which can be determined are tensile strength, elongation at break, stress at a given elongation, elongation at a given stress, stress at yield, and elongation at yield.
