ASTM D790 Flexural Properties of Unreinforced and Reinforced Plastics and Electrical Insulating Materials
ASTM D790 is a test method that determines the flexural (bending) properties of unreinforced and reinforced plastics, high-modulus composites, and electrical insulation materials. Flexural strength, flexural modulus, and other associated variables are examples of flexural characteristics. The mechanical behavior and performance of plastics under bending loads are evaluated using the ASTM D790 standard test procedure, which yields important data for material selection, quality assurance, and product design.

Introduction to ASTM D790
The ASTM D790 test method is intended to quantify the flexural characteristics of polymers. This test method determines the flexural properties of both reinforced and unreinforced plastics, including electrical insulating materials and high-modulus composites. In particular, quality control and specification reasons make use of the results. The stiff and semi-rigid materials can both be tested using the ASTM D790 technique. However, it is still unable to calculate flexural strength for materials that do not yield or break on the test specimen’s exterior when subjected to a 5.0% strain limit. MaTestLab is a top testing service provider company. We have a large network of testing facilities in the United States.
ASTM D790 Test Method
The ASTM D790 test method utilizes a universal testing machine (UTM) and a three-point bend fixture (a three-point loading system) to apply a load to the plastic specimen, causing it to bend. The specimen rests on two supports and is loaded using a loading nose midway between the supports. ASTM D790 test parameters, based on sample thickness, are support span, loading speed, and max deflection.

Test procedure at ambient temperature
The UTM has an installed thermal machine. The chamber has built-in heaters to elevate the temperatures. For reduced temperatures, the chamber uses CO2 as a coolant. The thermal chamber allows the specimen to be mounted from the base as well as the crosshead of the machine. This arrangement enables test mounts to pass through the top and bottom of the chamber. Test fixtures are installed inside the chamber. Testing is conducted inside the chamber at the required temperatures.

ASTM D790 Equipment and Sample Preparation
Specimen Details
Specimens must be solid and uniformly rectangular.
Specimen dimensions
The general sample size is 3.2 mm × 12.7 mm × 125 mm (approximately 0.125 inch × 0.5 inch × 5.0 inch).
Specimen preparation
Specimens are injection molded or, cut from molded or extruded sheets or plates, or cut from molded or extruded shapes.
ASTM D790 Results and Interpretation
This test method evaluates flexural stress (σf), flexural strain (εf), flexural strength (σfM), flexural offset yield strength, flexural stress at break (σfB), and stress at a given strain of the plastic specimens. The ASTM D790 test also measures the tangent modulus of elasticity (also known as the modulus of elasticity), secant modulus, and chord modulus (Ef) of plastic materials. Flexural properties vary with specimen depth, temperature, atmospheric conditions, and strain rate.
Tests related to ASTM D790
ASTM D790 is related to tests, including ASTM D618 for plastics conditioning, ASTM D638 for measuring the tensile strength of plastics, and ASTM D5974 for testing the physical dimensions of plastics.
Use of D790 in Various Industries
This standard is widely applied in any industry, including automotive, aerospace, construction, consumer products, and packaging, and it measures the flexural properties of plastics and polymers. This test is a tool for the evaluation of the mechanical performance of all types of components, composite decking, pipes, insulation, and containers.
Materials Commonly Tested with D790
In this test, various plastics and composites like thermoplastics like PE and PP, ABS, PVC, thermosetting plastics such as epoxies, polyesters, and urethane-based composites, reinforced plastics, including fiber-reinforced polymers used in different industries like automotive, aerospace, and construction, among others, are tested.
Common Challenges and Troubleshooting in D790 Testing
Testing faces challenges like improper sample preparation, inconsistent loading, environmental factors, and testing rate deviations, causing inaccurate flexural strength measurements. Regular calibration and alignment are necessary for data accuracy.
Safety and Best Practices in ASTM D790 Testing
Samples are handled with caution, the environment is stabilized, and personal protective equipment is worn. Equipment is also handled based on the proper protocol. The operators are those who know their emergency procedures. All these will ensure a safe and efficient test, and the possibility of material fragments and equipment failure and discomfort to the operators is eliminated.
Importance of ASTM D790
The standard is important to determine the flexural properties of plastics and composites, like flexural strength and modulus of elasticity, which are vital in performance-related applications like automotive components, construction, and consumer products.
