ASTM D1506 Standard Test Methods for Carbon Black Ash Content

ASTM D1506 addresses the procedure for determining carbon black ash content. Weighing is done before and after 1 hour at 125°C, and the air-dried sample is burned for 16 hours at 550°C. Weighing and calculating the residual ash as a percentage of the dry sample are done. The first method used is the Mud Furnace Method. The second method is the Microwave Furnace Method.

    Introduction to ASTM D1506

The purpose of ASTM D1506 is to determine the ash content of carbon black. The quantity of non-carbon components left over after combustion is known as the ash content of carbon black. The catalyst in the feedstock and the water used in the production process are the primary ash sources. MaTestLab is one of the best testing service providers, with the best network of testing laboratories in the USA to carry out ASTM D1506 tests for our clients.

    ASTM D1506 Test Method

Muffle Furnace TechniquePorous quartz fiber crucibles with optional disks are ignited in a furnace set to 550–625°C for 15 minutes. Porcelain crucibles with covers are placed in a muffle furnace for an hour. After one hour of drying in a gravity-convection oven, the sample is weighed and cooked for sixteen or one and a half hours at 550°C. After that, the crucible is covered and weighed again until the mass remains consistent.
Microwave Furnace TechniqueCrucibles and covers are preheated to 550°C for one hour, then cooled to room temperature to prepare carbon black. A carbon black sample is placed in a container and dried at 125°C in a gravity convection oven. Once the crucible is empty, it is weighed, and 2 grams of carbon black is added. The samples are placed in a desiccator, heated in an ashing chamber of a microwave furnace, and then the crucibles are taken out. Once the mass shift is less than 0.5 mg, the mass loss is calculated and heated.

    ASTM D1506 Test Result

To sum up, ASTM D1506 offers comprehensive instructions for determining the amount of ash in carbon black samples. It guarantees precision and consistency in determining the ash content, which is an essential step in determining the quality and purity of carbon black materials, by delineating particular protocols and standards.

    ASTM D1506 Related Tests

ASTM D1506 is related to tests including ASTM D1799 for packaged carbon black shipment sampling and ASTM D1900 for bulk carbon black shipment sampling.
