ASTM C1107 Standard Specification for Packaged Dry, Hydraulic-Cement Grout (Nonshrink)
ASTM C1107 describes what is necessary for dry, packaged, non-shrinking hydraulic-cement grout. The specification is meant for grout used under base plates, machinery foundations, precast panels and other applications requiring the grout to be stable in size. Grout is most often mixed at the construction site using water and it needs to show controlled expansion either prior to setting or afterward. ASTM C1107 separates the material into three grades according to how strong it is and how much it changes in volume. Because of the specification, the performance, strength and durability will be the same in various environments and during different construction projects.

ASTM C1107 Introduction
In areas where accuracy and durability are important such as in precision construction and equipment mounting, no shrink grouts are necessary. This standard sets rules for the physical features and performance of such grouts, so that they meet flow, setting time, early strength and volume needs. The standard divides grout into Grade A, B or C based on what it needs to do and the amount it may expand. They are very helpful for covering gaps between structures and ensuring a smooth spread of load. To ensure grouts perform well, companies mix cement, fillers and chemical additives in specific amounts. When ASTM C1107 is followed, these materials keep their nonshrink properties under different conditions and loads.
ASTM C1107 Test Method
Compressive Strength
Tested using 2-inch cube specimens cured under standard lab conditions, measured at 1, 3, and 28 days.
Expansion Measurement
Linear expansion evaluated in a mold using a comparator, measured at 1, 3, and 28 days in air or water.
Flow Consistency
Flow cone test using a standard flow cone device to measure time taken for grout to pass through an orifice.
ASTM C1107 Equipment and Sample Preparation
Cube Molds
Grout is cast into steel cube molds of 2 x 2 x 2 inches; molds must be oiled before casting.
Comparator and Gauge Pins
Used to measure dimensional changes; specimens are 1-inch x 1-inch x 10-inch bars with embedded gauge studs.
Mixing Apparatus
Low-speed mechanical mixer used to blend dry grout and water uniformly for at least 5 minutes.
ASTM C1107 Results and Interpretation
The grout should have minimum values of compressive strength as required for its intended grade. Grade C should have a minimum value of 8000 psi at 28 days, for instance. Expansion should be within a range of positive dimension change with a defined limit to ensure nonshrink properties. Flow values should be in accordance with the workability needs of the application, and low flow may reflect inadequate water ratio or mixing. Any inconsistency in these results indicates non-compliance, which could impact bearing capacity and alignment during final installation.

ASTM C1107 Related Articles
ASTM C827 describes the procedure for measuring early volume change in cement pastes. ASTM C939 specifies the flow cone method applied for testing grout flow. ASTM C109 standardizes compressive strength testing of cement mortars. ASTM C940 offers procedures for expansion and bleeding measurements in grouts.
Materials Commonly Tested with ASTM C1107
Materials that undergo ASTM C1107 testing are prepackaged dry cementitious grouts made of Portland cement, silica fume, fly ash, and graded aggregates. They are formulated to react with water to create a flowable, expansive, and high-strength grout.
Applications of ASTM C1107 in Industry
ASTM C1107 grouts are extensively applied in structural uses like machine base anchoring, column base grouting, precast panel setting, and void repair in concrete structures. Power generation, transportation, water treatment, and heavy equipment industries depend on these grouts for stable and secure foundations.
Safety and Best Practices in ASTM C1107
The code stresses protection while working with dry grout and mixing operations. Ventilation, skin protection, and regulated water addition are required to avoid exposure to chemicals and the respiratory system. Techniques of curing are also given to achieve maximum strength and volume stability.
Importance of ASTM C1107
Compliance with C1107 standard is essential to obtain long-lasting and dimensionally stable installation. It avoids settlement failure in machinery foundations, proper loading transfer, and minimal repairs at a huge cost due to cracking or disbonding. The standard offers confidence that the material will perform as expected under both static and dynamic loads, which is necessary for construction and infrastructure safety, reliability, and long-life.
