ISO 14853 Anaerobic Biodegradability of Plastic Materials

ISO 14853 test for plastic material biodegradability in anaerobic aqueous medium. This test measures how many carbons are being transformed from the sample into gaseous carbon, CO2, and CH4 during the biodegradation in the conditions of an anaerobic digester, which also can demonstrate that the product is stable during a defined period required for declaring its biodegradability. The duration of the test can sometimes go as long as 90 days, depending on how fast your products need to inhibit.

    Introduction to ISO 14853

ISO 14853 prescribes an analytical method for determining the ability of plastic materials to be biodegraded in an anaerobic aqueous phase. ISO 14853 measures how much carbon is transiting from the sample to the biogas phases of carbon (CO2 and CH4) during biodegradation under a set of conditions associated with anaerobic digester conditions. The Potential to Validate Status at a Given Point in Time that Helps to Achieve Requirements Connected With The Designation Of The Biodegradability Product. The duration of the test can be from 90 days, according to your product needs.

    ISO 14853 Test Method

Test procedure In this method, biodegradation is determined in an aqueous system by measuring the rate of production of biogas from anaerobic microorganisms. Sludge activity is tracked using several parallel blank and reference controls. Furthermore, three replicate vessels for each group are also prepared. Changes in the pressure of headspace above the vessels OR flux of biogas, and at the close of the test, inorganic carbon is extracted.
Incubation condition The test substance is added to a sealed container containing digested sludge at a solid concentration between 1 g/L to 3 g/L. This container is then incubated at 35 ± 2ºC for a maximum of 90 days.

    ISO 14853 Results and Interpretation

The extent of biodegradation is determined from total inorganic carbon and methane-C produced as a percentage of the measured or calculated amount of carbon added as a test substance, with over 70% of degradation for reference within 60 days. The difference in the percentage biodegradation of the reference in the different vessels is less than 20% of the mean value. If inadequate biodegradation has occurred, pH should not exceed the values of 7 ± 1.
