Introduction

A screw pitch gauge is a tool that has the purpose of measuring the pitch of a screw thread or tapped hole by comparing its serrated leaves against the threads of the screw or tapped hole. Each of the leaves has been precisely machined to have a certain number of teeth per inch (TPI) or a specified metric pitch in millimeters. The gauge can quickly put the thread types and sizes at the user’s fingertips without involving the whole profile measuring device, thus being very handy for field and workshop applications.

Principle and Methodology

The screw pitch gauge operates on the principle of direct verification by the user, who selects a leaf from the gauge, which is marked with a known pitch, and aligns it with the threads of the fastener. In case the teeth fit perfectly without gaps or rocking upon introduction of such a gauge into the thread grooves, it can be correctly concluded that the pitch has been correctly identified. The same method of pitch measurement or comparison can be done on metric and imperial threads using separate pitch gauges or dual-scale instruments that can cover other threads such as UNC, UNF, or ISO metric.

Instrumentation

A standard screw pitch gauge is a small, compact, and foldable set of metal leaves, each etched with a certain pitch value. These leaves have been hardened for use and are constructed to thread profile standards. Gauges are available in sets for metric threads of pitch values (0.25 mm through 6 mm) or imperial threads (4 TPI through 80 TPI). Specialized and custom gauges exist for other applications, and dual-format gauges exist. Although it is manual, the gauge is often associated with calipers or microscopes for verification in precision engineering.

Strengths and Limitations

Its ease, portability, and versatility are the key characteristics of a screw pitch gauge. It provides a fast and dependable pitch-determining method without needing electronic tools or calibration. Low cost and tough, it is ideal for professional as well as DIY users. Its limitations are measuring old or damaged threads, charting only thread pitch, and perhaps not thread depth or angle. It also depends on the user’s accuracy and good visibility, which may be poor in cramped spaces or ones with poor lighting. Still, it remains an indispensable tool for mechanical work involving threaded fasteners.
