The OECD 301F test for biodegradability measures the biodegradability of a test substance as determined by the consumption of oxygen in the biodegradation process as recorded on sealed respirometers or closed bottles with an air space and will hence exhibit a pressure change in the bottle or respirometer in proportion to the total oxygen consumed that reveals how much of the test substance was biodegradable over time.     Introduction To OECD 301F

    The OECD 301 F test is one of the tests in the OECD 301 series to determine the ready biodegradability of a chemical, where biodegradation occurs in an aerobic environment. Known as the Manometric Respirometry Test. This test assesses oxygen uptake by microorganisms during the degradation of a test substance and the determination of true biodegradability.

    Test procedure A closed bottle contains some water and the sample material, creating a small air space inside. As the sample breaks down, it uses up both the oxygen and the air space. The drop in oxygen pressure is quantified using a manometer, which serves as a measure of the biodegradation rate.

    Specimen DetailsThe bottle is kept in aerobic conditions, usually at a stable temperature of 20±2°C, for a duration of 28 days. Throughout this time, the microorganisms can break down the test substance, using oxygen as part of the process.
