ASTM E9 Compression Testing of Metallic Materials at Room Temperature
ASTM E9 is a set of standard test methods providing yield strength, the upper yield strength, the Young's modulus, the stress-strain curve, and the compressive strength for metallic materials. ASTM E9 standard comprises apparatus, specimens, and process for axial-load compression testing of metallic materials at room temperature. The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard.

ASTM E9 Introduction
The data obtained from ASTM E9 compression test includes the yield strength, the yield point, Young’s modulus, the stress-strain curve, and the compressive strength for metallic material specimens. This strength is dependent on total strain and specimen geometry. It is of interest in the analyses of structures subject to compressive or bending loads or both and in the analyses of metalworking and fabrication processes that involve large compressive deformation. Buckling and barreling can complicate results and should be minimized. The ASTM E9 test method is not used for materials that fail in compression by a shattering fracture.
Compressive properties are useful for structures subject to compressive forces or bending moments and metal works and fabrication processes involving large compressive deformation such as forging and rolling. On the other hand, for brittle or nonductile metals that fracture in tension at stresses below the yield strength, ASTM E9 compression test can obtain the strain range of the stress-strain data.

Loading Rate
The standard recommends an acceptable loading rate depending on material qualities and intended results, with special consideration given to high-strength materials.
Deformation Measurement
Extensometers or other comparable instruments are used. The placement of the extensometer and factors for calibration are specified.
Testing Conditions
The test environment, typically room temperature, is specified in the standard. Additionally, the suggestion is made to run additional tests to confirm that the results are repeatable and reliable.
ASTM E9 Equipment and Sample Preparation
Specimen Details
The ASTM E9 standard recognizes three forms of solid cylindrical test specimens for metallic materials: short, medium-length, and long. Additionally, rectangular or sheet-type specimens can be used in compression testing, particularly when lateral support is required.
Specimen Dimensions
ASTM E9 provides suggested dimensions for solid compression test specimens in the form of cylindrical cylinders, while rectangular or sheet-type specimens depend on the jig used for lateral support
Specimen Preparation
Surface requirements include minimal variation in diameter, width, or thickness; a coaxial centerline within 0.01 inches (0.25 mm); a surface finish of 63 in. (1.6 m) or better; flatness and parallelism of ends to within 38 of an arc; edges of rectangular specimens with a width of material machined away equal to the thickness, and gage length location away from ends.
ASTM E9 Test Results and Interpretation
ASTM E9 includes calculating the modulus of elasticity, determining the yield strength by the offset method, determining the yield point, and determining the compressive strength. The yield point is the maximum stress obtained just prior to the sudden drop in stress, and the compressive strength is the maximum stress at or before fracture, as determined by dividing the maximum load by the cross-sectional area. For ductile materials, compressive strength may be determined from the stress-strain diagram at a specified total strain.
Other Tests Related to ASTM E9
ASTM E9 is related to standards such as ASTM E4 for force verification of testing machines and ASTM E6 terminology relating to methods of mechanical testing.
Use of ASTM E9 in Various Industries
The standard is globally applied in the aerospace, automotive, construction, and manufacturing industries to test the compressive strength of metallic materials, which may result in structural components experiencing high-pressure environments, effectively leading to durability and safety in the design of the vehicle.
Materials Commonly Tested with ASTM E9
The standard defines compressive properties for metals like steel, aluminum, titanium, or copper alloys. It then renders exactly the data of mechanical performance to be taken into account in engineering and designing.
Common Challenges and Troubleshooting in ASTM E9 Testing
The main challenge facing during testing is proper specimen alignment to prevent uneven stress distribution. Troubleshooting also includes proper fixture setup and machine calibration for the reliability and repeatability of compressive strength data.
Safety and Best Practices in ASTM E9 Testing
Proper safety during testing involves using protective gear, maintaining clear workspaces, adhering to guidelines, regular maintenance of the equipment, and operator training so that risks are kept low and dependable data is achieved, and the specimen fails at high loads.
Importance of ASTM E9
The standard is very crucial in the testing of metal compressive properties as it ensures integrated and performance of constituents in industries that possess mechanical strengths and must ensure uniformity within sectors. It thereby helps in aspects of safety, quality, and innovation in material engineering.
