Introduction to Drug Assay Testing

Testing in drug assay is the most important in pharmaceutical analysis, consisting of several methods of determining the concentration of active ingredients in a drug formulation. Strengths 

The primary strength of drug assay testing lies in the significant amount of accurate and precise data regarding the concentration and purity of drugs. This is basically of great importance in the strict requirements for ensuring that pharmaceutical products are safe and effective. HPLC and mass spectrometry techniques are incredibly sensitive in detecting trace amounts of impurities or degradation products. Drug assays also help in observing the differences between lot-to-lot variability during manufacture, so manufacturers can maintain consistency.

Limitations

Drug assays are notoriously accurate but, of course, can be very resource-intensive in terms of being instrument-intensive and requiring highly trained personnel. Techniques such as HPLC and mass spectrometry are expensive and time-consuming, so they are only practical for use in better-equipped laboratories. Even drug assay methods are sensitive to factors such as temperature, purity of the solvents, and equipment calibration.
