ISO 16221 Seawater Biodegradability Test

The ISO 16211 is a standard that describes a test method to determine the inherent biodegradability (ultimate) of an organic material based on seawater. The test does not use a fabricated inoculum, and the microorganisms are those that are natural to seawater. Five different methods are described (DOC die-away, closed bottle, two-phase closed bottle, CO2 evolution, and CO2 headspace), which occur within 60 days.

    ISO 16221 Results and Interpretation

    The results of such tests, when referenced against a reference substance (such as an organic compound of known biodegradability), are useful in determining the ultimate biodegradability of a test substance in the marine environment. The greater the percentage of biodegradation, expressed as the organic carbon converted to CO2 or the oxygen uptake, the higher the biodegradability.
