ISO 14852 The Ultimate Biodegradability of Plastics Through CO2 Evolution

ISO 14852 is a test for the ultimate biodegradability of plastic materials exposed to aerobic aqueous media. ISO 14852 measures CO2 evolution during biodegradation in a constantly aerated bottle, during which the test can be for a maximum of six months, depending on your product requirements.

    Introduction to ISO 14852

ISO 14852 is an International Standard that tests the capability of plastic materials to biodegrade aerobically and in an aquatic environment (with availability of oxygen) through the quantification of carbon dioxide (CO₂) evolved. The outcome indicates ultimate aerobic biodegradation, the plastics are simply converted to CO₂, water, and biomass by microorganisms. ISO 14852 is valuable when testing biodegradable plastics such as biodegradable packaging, biodegradable coatings, and water-soluble polymers. Where ISO 14851 tests the oxygen consumption, ISO 14852 sees that metabolic activity through CO₂ evolved constitutes a more direct measure of mineralization.

     ISO 14852  Test Method

Test procedure The test determines the biodegradability of a polymeric or plastic material by measuring the CO2 evolution during the biodegradation process over six months. During the biodegradation process, CO2 and H2O are formed. The CO2 production at the end of the test is measured.

      ISO 14852  Results and Interpretation

The measured CO2 is compared to the theoretical CO2, and therefore provides an easy calculation of the percentage of degradation over the six months.

Use of  ISO 14852  in Various Industries

ISO 14852 is commonly used in bioplastics and packaging design, R&D of eco-friendly materials, waste management, and water treatment.

Materials Commonly Tested with  ISO 14852

This test can be used for material with high solubility, low solubility, insoluble, and/or absorptive materials. Natural and/or synthetic polymers, co-polymers, and mixtures of polymers can be tested through this method, as well as plastic materials that may contain additives (plasticizers and colorants, etc) and similarly other materials.
