The environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) is a scanning electron microscope (SEM) that gathers electron micrographs of wet, uncoated, or both types of objects by creating a gaseous environment in the specimen chamber. ESEM can work in a variety of pressure situations, making it ideal for viewing wet, greasy, and nonconductive samples without substantial preparation.

Introduction to Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy
ESEM was developed to overcome the limitations of conventional SEM. With its specialized electron detectors and differential pumping systems, which allow the electron beam to be transferred from the high vacuum in the gun area to the high pressure achievable in its specimen chamber, the ESEM is a complete and unique instrument designed for imaging specimens in their natural state.
Principle and Methodology of ESEM
An ESEM uses a scanned electron beam and electromagnetic lenses to focus and direct the beam onto the specimen surface in the same way that a traditional SEM does. A very small, focused electron spot (probe) is scanned in raster form across a small specimen region. The beam electrons interact with the specimen surface layer, producing a variety of signals (information) that can be gathered using appropriate detectors. The output of these detectors modulates the screen of a monitor, using appropriate electronics, to generate an image that corresponds to the small raster and information originating from the specimen surface, pixel by pixel.

Instrumentation
The significant components of ESEM are the electron source to provide a focused electron beam, differential pumping system to maintain pressure gradients between the high-vacuum electron column and the low-vacuum specimen chamber, specimen chamber to accommodate varying pressure levels, and the introduction of gases, detectors, control and imaging system that include both software and hardware to control the microscope parameters and to capture and process images.
Applications of ESEM
ESEM is a versatile imaging technique used in different fields, including biological sciences, materials science, industrial applications, geology, and food science. It permits the observation of non-conductive and hydrated specimens, providing an understanding of cell structure and function without dehydration or coating. It is also used in materials science to study properties of materials sensitive to high vacuum and environmental conditions.
You can share your esem testing requirements with MaTestLab. MaTestLab has a vast network of material testing laboratories, spread across the USA and Canada. We support your all material testing needs ranging from specific esem test to various testing techniques.
How much do I need to pay for the esem test?
Please contact us for a detailed quote for your esem testing needs. Cost incurred to carry out different esem testing methodology depends on the type of raw material; number of samples, coupons, or specimens; test conditions, turn around time etc. Costs of some ASTM testing methods start from $100 and the final value depends upon the factors listed above. Please contact us for the best and latest prices.
How many samples are required for esem?
The required number of samples or specimens should comply with the procedure given in the esem standard. However, the MaTestLab operations team can assist you for your special requirements once you share your testing details with us.
How much discount can I get on the esem test?
MaTestLab has a vast testing laboratory network, hence we bring you the best testing facilities in a cost-effective way. We offer considerable discounts (15-20%) to our returning customers based on test volume and frequency.
How many days will it take to complete the esem test?
The turnaround time for esem test methodology depends upon the test procedure mentioned in the standard test document. However, we at MaTestLab understand your research requirements and hence try to get your test completed within the least possible time.
