ASTM D1970 Standard Specification for Self-Adhering Polymer Modified Bituminous Sheet Materials Used as Steep Roofing Underlayment for Ice Dam Protection
ASTM D1970 sets standards for self-adhered, polymer-modified bituminous sheet products for application as roofing underlayment. These products are vital for blocking water penetration from ice dams in steep-slope roofs. The standard requires adhesion, water resistance, low-temperature flexibility, and thermal stability. It requires tests to establish performance under harsh environmental conditions. These sheet membranes are used mainly under main roofing materials, creating a watertight barrier. Conformity with ASTM D1970 provides assurance, longevity, and protection of the roof structure from water damage.

ASTM D1970 Introduction
In areas where ice accumulation and ice deficiency are common, roof systems require a protective underlayment that can withstand water intrusion under severe weather conditions. The ASTM D1970 addresses this requirement by specifying the performance characteristics for a modified bituminous sheet with polymers such as SBS or APP. These self-harm membranes are applied directly to roof ornamentation and engineered to create a continuous waterproofing. This specification ensures that the material meets specific mechanical and environmental performance criteria, including tensile strength, elongation, peel adhesion, and nail pull. These factors contribute to the ability of materials for freeze-melting cycles, mechanical stress, and prolonged contact with heat or UV light. According to this standard, products are strictly tested for adhesion of various substrates, resistance to thermal cycling, and water penetration under simulated field conditions.
ASTM D1970 Test Method
Nail Sealability Test
A galvanized roofing nail is driven through the membrane into plywood; the sample is then subjected to water spray to check for leakage.
Low Temperature Flexibility
A specimen is conditioned at -18°C, wrapped around a mandrel, and inspected for cracks or fractures to assess cold weather performance.
Adhesion to Plywood
The membrane is applied to plywood and peeled back at a 180° angle; the required minimum peel strength must be met or exceeded.
ASTM D1970 Equipment and Sample Preparation
Nail Sealability Specimen
Cut a 300 mm × 300 mm sheet and apply to 12 mm thick plywood; drive roofing nails and condition at 23°C for 24 hours before testing.
Flexibility Test Specimen
Cut strips 25 mm wide and 150 mm long; condition at -18°C for 2 hours before wrapping around a 25 mm diameter mandrel.
Adhesion Test Specimen
Use 100 mm wide strips adhered to clean, dry plywood; press uniformly and allow to set for 24 hours before peel testing.
ASTM D1970 Results and Interpretation
Test results are compared to the minimum standards set forth by ASTM D1970. Nail sealability provides no visible water leakage, while the results of the flexibility test show no cracking upon bending at low temperatures, which is an indication of how tough the material will be during winter installations. Adhesion strength must meet force requirements to ensure bonding in roofing. When these requirements are not met, membrane rejection or reformulation on the part of the manufacturer can happen.

ASTM D1970 Related Articles
The ASTM D2523 defines the status of the test for the bituminous roofing materials to simulate environmental risk. ASTM D1970 often depends on ASTM D5147, which is for the evaluation of tensile strength and bitumen membrane. ASTM D6162 provides specifications for other polymer-propelled bituminous roof sheets used in commercial applications.
Materials Commonly Tested with ASTM D1970
Specific materials evaluated under the ASTM D1970 include SBS-modified bituminous sheets with polyethylene or aluminum surface films. These membranes often include release liner and reinforcement fabrics, such as fiberglass or polyester, for strength and flexibility. Variants may vary in surface texture or UV resistance, depending on the intended installation conditions.
Applications of ASTM D1970 in Industry
The primary application of analog material is in the form of an underlayment in standing roof systems for residential, institutional, and commercial buildings. They are especially important in susceptible areas for ice dams, ensuring protection under asphalt rings, metal panels, slats, or tiles. These membranes are also used around the valleys, events, rakes, and penetrations to prevent moisture infiltration.
Safety and Best Practices in ASTM D1970
ASTM D1970 emphasizes safe handling and application practices. The membrane should be installed on dry, clean substrates using manufacturer-infinite recommended temperature. Fast equipment should be used to ensure clean cuts without damaging the material. The heat exposure during storage or installation should be minimized to avoid premature activation. Workers are advised to use gloves during application to avoid skin exposure to bituminous components.
Importance of ASTM D1970
Testing under ASTM D1970 is important to validate the performance of roofing under real-world stresses. These tests ensure that the material can firmly seal around the fasteners, maintain adhesion during cold installations, and oppose cracking or leaks. Ensuring compliance reduces the risk of internal water damage, structural decay, and expensive roof repair. Ultimately, standard long-term construction envelopes contribute to integrity and living security.
