Introduction to Viscosity Measurement
To the scientists it is the way of adding a specific value to the research of the type of fluid and how it behaves in the flow and the resistance to deformation, viscosity measurement is an essential method. This concept stands for the main element shared by different industries like manufacturing, medicine, etc. on all levels of the hierarchy serving as appropriate quality assurance representatives.
Principles of Viscosity Measurement
Viscosity is a measure liquid’s or gas flow resistance. Viscosity evaluation methods obtain viscosity by different ways, including stress and strain rate, rotational motions or fluid response to an external force.
Viscosity Measurement Techniques
Capillary that determines fluid streams through a hose under gravity or pressure. The flow velocity is determined and the viscosity is obtained using the relation established by Poiseuille’s law.
During rotation, vibration is on when a spindle or rotor is dipped in liquid. Viscosity is the calculation of the amount of force sufficient to rotate the spindle and the angular velocity produced.
While using a cone or plate geometry, the microdevices induce shear flow in a fluid structure. The viscosity depends on the force required to maintain the same speed of rotation or the fluid fixed in place.
It helps to understand whether the phenomenon is dampened during the test or, on the other hand, whether the resonant sensor is in contact with the fluid. Visscopy of the liquid is characterized by a change in frequency or amplitude of vibration.
Detecting the difference in capacitance between electrodes in contact with a liquid and the liquid’s viscosity will change the liquid’s dielectric properties.
Instruments used in Viscosity Measurement Techniques
- Viscometers are the specific devices combining the measuring instruments capable of the evaluation or the level of resistance, of a flowing liquid. Illustrations involve all the viscometers, such as the Ostwald viscometer, rotating viscometer, and the falling ball viscometer.
- Rheometers: Measurement tools that can be used not only to measure the viscosity but also the viscoelastic properties of a fluid or solid, which are very helpful in involved flow and quality control.
