ASTM D4214 Evaluating the Degree of Chalking of Exterior Paint Films

    What is ASTM D4214?

ASTM D4214(Standard Test Methods for Evaluating the Degree of Chalking of Exterior Paint Films) assesses the degree of chalking of exterior paint films by measuring the reflectance of the residue collected by an adhesive tape or by identifying the visual standard that appropriately represents the characteristics of the residue collected on the surface of the sample. However, this current practice does not outline a specimen conditioning technique.

What are the Test Procedures for ASTM D4214?

A reference standard or reflectance measurements are used in ASTM D4214 to describe the level of chalking of external paint. To achieve its goals, this procedure compares the amount of residue gathered on the specimen’s surface by a fingertip or cloth with the photographic reference standards available in this practice.

There are four test procedures for the characterization:

    1. Method A entails comparing the amount of chalk that was deposited on the cloth used to strike the specimen with a reasonable amount of pressure to one of the visual standards made available by this procedure.
    2. Method B entails evaluating the amount of residue that has accumulated on a damp fingertip using a rating system or a numerical scale,
    3. Method C uses a reflectometer to evaluate this characteristic. More specifically, it uses ten masking tape bands to collect the chalk present on the sample and then uses the tape strips’ reflectance range to provide a chalk rating for the specimen.
    4. Method D uses the chalk on the sample surface, which is collected using the adhesive section of a tape, and compares the whiteness of the residue collected on the tape to the photographic reference provided on a black velvet surface in diffused light.

ASTM D4214 Results Analysis and Interpretation

    • ASTM D4214 quantifies the degree of chalking on exterior paint films using a numerical rating scale, providing an objective measure of coating weathering and durability.
    • This method can be used with an accelerated aging test to assess the paint’s stability over time. Outdoor weather, the dryness of the specimen’s surface, and sample size must all be taken into account.
