pH of engine coolants is an important sign of corrosion prevention capacity and thermal efficiency in engine coolants. ASTM D1287 provides a standardized procedure for pH measurement on aqueous engine coolants (either concentrated or diluted) with the help of a calibrated pH meter and electrode system. The appropriate PH level is the one that allows the corrosion inhibitors to be functional without the system components being corroded, e.g., aluminum, copper, steel, etc. Gradually, the coolant degradation or contamination may cause a change in pH and result in poor protection and high risks of failure. The standard allows proper assessment of coolant status on quality control in the manufacturing process and on servicing systems using maintenance assessment.
ASTM D1287 Standard Test Method for pH of Engine Coolants and Antirusts
What is ASTM D1287?
What is teh Scope of ASTM D1287?
ASTM D1287 will be required to retain the performance and longevity of cooling systems. It can measure pH stability with precise measurements, thereby ensuring that the corrosion inhibitors are effective and preventing component degradation, enhancing heat transfer, and improving engine life.
What are the Uses of ASTM D1287 in Industry?
ASTM D 1287 is applied in the automotive, marine, and industrial industries to ensure the quality of coolant, product development, and maintenance to determine the reliability and longevity of the system.
Materials Commonly Tested with ASTM D1287
This is applicable to engine coolants containing ethylene glycol and propylene glycol, and also aqueous antirust solutions that are applied in car and stationary engines.
ASTM D1287 Equipment and Sample Preparation Guide
| Tube specimens | Samples are cut from finished product lengths. The ends are deburred, and internal surfaces are cleaned before testing to remove contaminants. |
| Testing apparatus | Apparatus used to confirm compliance with the physical and mechanical requirements includes calibrated tensile testing machines, hydrostatic pressure rigs, and eddy-current flaw detectors. |
| Conditioning | The samples shall be tested in the as-fabricated, annealed, or stress-relieved condition based on the delivery specification. Surface finish and dimensions shall conform to stipulated tolerances. |
Testing Procedures and Requirements for ASTM D1287
| Chemical analysis | The chemical composition of the alloy is checked by optical emission spectroscopy or atomic absorption spectroscopy to ensure that the required UNS alloy specifications are met. |
| Mechanical testing | Tensile and hardness tests are conducted on finished tubes or pipes to determine the yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation according to ASTM E8. |
| Hydrostatic or eddy-current testing | Every tube or pipe shall be hydrostatically pressure-tested or be eddy-current tested to ensure soundness of the wall and freedom from leaks or other defects. |
ASTM D1287 Test Results and Interpretation
Results are given in terms of the measured value of pH at 25 °C. Normal engine oils have a pH of 7.5 to 11.0 based on the formulation. A pH of less than 7.0 is a sign that acid could be formed, and corrosion could take place, whereas extremely high pH levels could cause scaling or precipitation of the inhibitors.

Other standards related to this are ASTM D1121, which determines the reserve alkalinity of an engine coolant; ASTM D1384, which determines the corrosion performance of engine coolants in glassware; ASTM D3306, which specifies requirements on ethylene glycol base engine coolants; and ASTM D6210, which covers fully formulated glycol base engine coolants.
Safety and Best Practices in ASTM D1287
Safety measures in the laboratory should be observed properly, and this involves the application of gloves and eye protection. Coolant samples have to be handled with care, not to contact the skin and inhale vapors. Rinsing of equipment after testing should be done to avoid cross-contamination.
