Introduction to ASTM D1005
This test procedure works well for measuring free films and is also suitable for measuring films on test panels used in laboratories. The deformability of the coating may affect the precision and accuracy of the thickness measurements. Coatings that easily distort when subjected to the measurement device’s load cannot be tested using this procedure. When coatings are applied to laboratory test panels, the uniformity of the substrate also affects the accuracy and precision of the thickness measurements. MaTestLab is one of the best testing service providers, with the best network of testing laboratories in the USA to carry out ASTM E168 tests for our clients.
ASTM D1005 Test Method
| Procedure A Using a stationary micrometer | To measure film thickness, firmly install the test panel and shut the gage. Three measurements are made for a 75 by 150-mm panel by recording the difference between the two before and after the film is removed. |
| Procedure B using a stationary micrometer | To measure a 2.5 μm film thickness, the gage must be gradually closed while the test panel is firmly attached to the base. After taking a measurement, a complimentary film is applied. |
| Procedure C using a hand-held micrometer | To measure film thickness, a hand-held micrometer with different anvils is used. The film thickness is measured at 2.5 μm (0.1 mil) on panels before and after coating. |
| Procedure D for using a hand-held micrometer | To measure thickness, hold the micrometer against the film with the anvils separated and record 2.5 μm (0.1 mil). Barrel micrometers should be measured using friction mode. |
ASTM D1005 Test Specimens
| Specimen Detail | Dry films of paint, varnish, lacquer, and similar items are test specimens for ASTM D1005 |
| Specimen Size | The panels must be large enough to allow measurements of the film thickness to be taken 25 mm (1 in.) from any edge. |
ASTM D1005 Test Result
The ASTM D1005 test technique uses micrometers to measure the thickness of dried films of paint, varnish, lacquer, and related materials.
ASTM D1005 Related Tests
ASTM D1005 is related to tests, including ASTM D823 for producing uniform-thickness films of varnishes and paints and ASTM D2370 for determining the tensile features of organic coatings.
