    What is ASTM E576?

    ASTM E576 is a standard test method used to determine the frost or dew point within the air space of sealed insulating glass units (IGUs) while the glass remains in a vertical position. This standard specifies the criteria for detecting whether the frost/dew point within the air spaces of sealed insulating glass units is below or above a given temperature in the field or in the laboratory. The values stated in SI are considered standard.

    What is the Scope of ASTM E576?

    The ASTM E576 test method can be used under real-world or simulated in-service situations. One side of the unit is exposed to room temperature and the other to natural or simulated weather conditions.

    ASTM E576 Testing Procedure and Requirements

    This test is carried out using a unique apparatus consisting of two cold cylindrical metal blocks stacked one on top of the other and separated by a regular gap. To determine the temperature at which frost occurs on the matching lower air-space glass surface, the test specimen is placed in contact with the cooled flat surface. When visible frost appeared, the dew point was recorded. The specimen should be conditioned at (75±5) °C.
