ASTM E465 is a set of standard test methods used for the determination of manganese dioxide in manganese ore by redox titrimetry. The results are expressed as manganese dioxide. It is done by two methods (Ferrous Ammonium Sulfate) and (Periodate (Sodium Oxalate) interchangeably. Redox titrimetry is being performed. The values are stated in SI units as they’re considered standard units.
ASTM E465 Standard Test Methods for Determination of Manganese (IV) in Manganese Ores by Redox Titrimetry
What is ASTM E465?
What is the Scope of ASTM E465?
These test methods provide procedures for determining the amount of manganese dioxide commonly found in manganese ore. This standard determines the amount of manganese (IV) present in the sample. The result may be expressed as available oxygen or as manganese dioxide.
Purpose: It measures the oxidizing capacity of manganese ores to check if they meet specific industrial quality and compositional rules. It provides step-by-step chemical procedures to measure manganese dioxide and manganese (IV) levels in ores using titration methods
Technique: It uses redox titrimetry, which is an oxidation-reduction chemical titration.
Methods: There are two test methods included in this standard and may be used interchangeably: (a) Ferrous Ammonium Sulfate and (b) Periodate (Sodium Oxalate) methods.
Reporting: Results are typically reported as manganese dioxide (MnO₂) or as available oxygen.
ASTM E465 is a highly significant method because it is used to comply with compositional specifications for manganese dioxide.
ASTM E465 Testing Procedure and Requirements
In the ferrous ammonium sulfate method, the manganese ore sample is first mixed with a ferrous ammonium sulfate solution. The manganese dioxide then reacts with ferrous iron. The excess ferrous iron is titrated with a standard potassium dichromate solution.
In the Sodium Oxalate method, the sample is mixed with sulfuric acid in the presence of sodium oxalate. The manganese dioxide reacts with an equal amount of oxalate. The excess sodium oxalate is titrated with potassium permanganate solution. The sample shall pass a No. 100 (150-μm) sieve.
