This test method covers the tension testing of metallic foil at room temperature in thicknesses less than 0.006 in. (0.150 mm).

ASTM E345 Sample Preparation and Equipment
This test can use two specimen types: Type A and Type B. Type A specimens shall be in accordance with the 1⁄2-in. (12.5-mm) the sheet-type specimen, and Type B specimens shall be in accordance with the 1⁄2-in. (12.5-mm) wide parallel-sided specimen. A tensile testing machine and a connected computer system for recording data are used.

ASTM E345 Testing Procedure and Requirements
ASTM E345 involves preparing Type A and Type B test specimens and measuring them for testing. Specific measurements include thickness and width. The thickness of specimens taken from soft foils or from foils 0.002 in. (0.05 mm) and thinner shall be determined to an accuracy of 2 % of the thickness by weighing. The width dimension to the nearest 0.001 in. (0.025 mm). Yield strength is measured by the Offset method and the extension-under-load method. Then the test will proceed to measure tensile strength; it is determined by dividing the maximum force carried by the specimen by the specimen’s original cross-sectional area. Then, elongation is measured for the Type A and Type B specimens using different methods. Elongation should be near 0.5 %.
