Introduction to ASTM E1
The term Beckmann thermometer is frequently used to refer to enclosed-scale thermometers. Within a wider temperature range, they can measure minor temperature variations of up to 6°C. ASTM E1 Test Method

| Test for permanency of pigment | After three hours at 260°C in the oven, the thermometer’s scale piece is taken out and allowed to cool. The thermometer is examined for variations in appearance between the tested and untested sections; rejection causes include burning out, loosening, chalking, or fading of the color. |
| Bulb stability test | After five minutes of heating, a thermometer is cooled to either 20°C or 50°C. A reference point is used to calculate the reading. After a full day of heating, cooling, and recalculating, the thermometer is used. A shift in the reference reading signifies the quality of the bulb glass. |

| Specimen Size | The stem needs to have an enamel back and a simple front and be constructed of appropriate thermometer tubing. The bulb requires glass with a viscosity of at least 1014.6 poises at 490 °C (914 °F) and at least 1013.4 poises at 520 °C (968 °F). |
