ASTM D721 Standard Test Method for Oil Content of Petroleum Waxes
ASTM D721 is a standardized test method used to determine the oil content present in petroleum waxes. A wax's strength, hardness, flexibility, resistance to scuffs, coefficient of friction, coefficient of expansion, melting temperature, and oil straining can all be significantly impacted by its oil concentration. The eventual purpose of the wax may determine how significant these impacts are.

D721 Introduction
The ASTM D721 test procedure includes the measurement of oil in petroleum waxes with a congealing point of 30°C (86°F) or above. The oil content of the waxes must not exceed 15%. Certain types of waxes with oil levels of more than 5% may not be compatible with methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), causing two liquid phases to develop. The test procedure is inapplicable to the material being tested if this happens.
D721 Standard Test Procedure
Specimen Selection
To collect petroleum wax samples, gather them from various locations within the storage or production plant. Avoid contamination from outside sources. Grind the wax into a uniform powder using a suitable grinder, thoroughly mixing to remove oil variations. Store the samples in sterile, airtight containers before testing to prevent moisture absorption or loss.
Test Setup and Execution
The ASTM D721 process involves sanitizing and functionalizing the testing apparatus, ensuring temperature, humidity, and other standard parameters are met, and accurately weighing a specimen using a calibrated balance. The specimen is then placed in an extraction device for accurate oil content estimation in petroleum wax.
D721 Equipment and Sample Preparation
Specimen Details
Petroleum wax samples are used in ASTM D721 testing by sourcing representative specimens from storage or production areas. To ensure uniformity and consistency, solid forms undergo homogenization into a finely powdered state, aiming for a homogeneous consistency through thorough mixing.
Specimen Dimensions
The weight of the sample is measured and prepared meticulously, either powdered or solid. Samples are stored in clean, airtight containers to prevent moisture absorption and potential alterations. Uniformity across the sample is crucial for precise and consistent test results, despite the fact that no specific shape is mandated.
D721 Test Results and Interpretation
The ASTM D721 standard records parameters like extraction time, temperature, and observations during the testing process. The extracted oil is then collected for analysis or disposal, and the oil content is determined using ASTM D721 standard formulas. A comprehensive report is then compiled, detailing test results, observations, and deviations from the standard procedure. This ensures accuracy and compliance with the standard.

Tests Related to D721
Important tests relevant to ASTM D721 include ASTM D323 Standard Test Method for Vapor Pressure of Petroleum Products, ASTM D874 Standard Test Method for Sulfated Ash from Lubricating Oils and Additives, and ASTM D1838 – Standard Test Method for Copper Strip Corrosion by Liquefied Petroleum (LP) Gases.
Use of D721 in Various Industries
The standard is important in industries such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food packaging because proper measurement of oil content would ensure product consistency, quality, regulatory compliance, and customer satisfaction by affecting the texture and application of the product.
Materials Commonly Tested with D721
The standard tests petroleum waxes, particularly paraffin and microcrystalline wax, that is commonly applied in coatings, candles, and lubricants. For a food-grade coating and an electrical insulation, the measurement of oil should be in exact specifications.
Common Challenges and Troubleshooting in D721
Problems associated with sample preparation and subsequent measurements due to entrained air or impurities in the wax are encountered in the testing. Partial dissolution or inadequate temperature control during dissolution may also lead to variations in oil content readings. Technicians may have to make some changes in the pre-treatment or calibration stages.
Safety and Best Practices in D721 Testing
Testing is inevitable as petroleum-based waxes and solvents have a tendency to flare easily. Proper safety measures include well-ventilated areas, the use of protective equipment, routine calibration, controlled testing environments, and adherence to guidelines for the storage of chemicals.
Importance of D721
This is a significant standard by which petroleum wax quality control and manufacturing are tested; it will establish the purity of the waxes, suitability for a specific type of use, and performance in products to assure consumers and regulatory agencies. A specified oil content ensures compliance with the application’s safety use.
