ASTM E815 Standard Test Method for Determination of Calcium Fluoride in Fluorspar by EDTA Complexometric Titrimetry

    What is ASTM E815?

    ASTM E815 is the standard test method for the determination of calcium fluoride in fluorspar by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid  (EDTA) complexometric titrimetry. This test method covers the process of determining calcium fluoride in acid-grade fluorspar and other types of fluorspar that can be rendered soluble. The values expressed in SI units are regarded as standard.

    What is the Scope of ASTM E815?

    Fluorspar is used as a flux in the glass and steel industries, as well as in the production of hydrofluoric acid. ASTM E815 (Standard Test Method for Determination of Calcium Fluoride in Fluorspar by EDTA Complexometric Titrimetry) is used to ensure that calcium fluoride content meets compositional criteria. All users of these techniques are expected to be qualified analysts able to perform common laboratory procedures competently and safely.

    ASTM E815 Sample Preparation Guide

    • Milligrams of calcium (X) in the 50-mL volume
    • Titration (in milliliters) by 2C sample.

    ASTM E815 Testing Procedure and Requirements

    The fluorine is released by fuming after the sample is destroyed with nitric and perchloric acids. The calcium is titrated with standard EDTA solution after the residue is dissolved in dilute hydrochloric acid and the solution is made alkaline. After extracting the former with dilute acetic acid, calcium present as carbonate is measured in a separate sample using EDTA solution.

    ASTM E815 Analysis Results and Interpretation

    Calculation is done using the following formula-

    Total calcium, % T=10VC/ab

    Where

    V = volume of titrant, mL,

    C = calcium equivalent of EDTA solution, mg/mL,

    a = milliliters of aliquot,

    b = grams of sample used,

    T = total calcium present
