ASTM E806 Carbon Tetrachloride and Chloroform in Liquid Chlorine by Direct Injection (Gas Chromatographic Procedure)

    What is ASTM E806?

The ASTM E806 test method determines the concentrations of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and chloroform (CHCl3) in liquid chlorine. The sample size and instrument are used to determine the lower limit of detection. The values expressed in SI units are considered standard.

What is the Scope of ASTM E806?

This test method determines CCl4 and CHCl3 in liquid chlorine. This method can analyze carbon tetrachloride over a range and with an upper limit of 149 mg/kg. Chloroform can also be detected over a range with 122 mg/kg as the upper limit, but may, with carbon tetrachloride, be applicable to a wider range. The lower limit of detection depends on sample size and the instrument used. For CCl4, the limit of detection (LOD) is 2.4, and the limit of quantification (LOQ) is 8. For CHCl3, the LOD is 3.3, and LOQ is 11.

Liquid chlorine may contain trace levels of CCl4 and CHCl3. When chlorine is used to purify water, these chemicals are transferred to the water. When the concentrations of CCl4 and CHCl3 in liquid chlorine are known, one can approximate the maximum amount of chlorine that can be added to the water.

ASTM E806 Equipment and Sample Preparation Guides

This test uses gas chromatography (GC) instruments and required solvents. Sample size and the instrument used; five ppm (w/w) is achievable. Measure the areas of the peaks for the CCl4 and CHCl3 and determine the μg/g of CCl4 and CHCl3 present in the sample.

ASTM E806 Testing Procedures and Requirements

Using a suitable syringe, a sample of liquid chlorine is injected into a gas chromatograph (GC) with a column capable of separating CCl4 and CHCl3 from Cl2 and other contaminants. The amount of CCl4 and CHCl3 in the sample is calculated by comparing the areas of the peaks obtained with the samples to the areas of peaks obtained with acceptable calibration standards under the same conditions.

ASTM E806 Analysis Result and Interpretation

    LOD and LOQ are calculated.
