The ASTM E738 test method describes determining aluminum in iron ores, concentrates, and agglomerates in the compositional range of 0.25 percent to 5% aluminum. The values stated in SI should be considered as standard.
ASTM E738 Determination of Aluminum in Iron Ores and Related Materials by EDTA Complexometric Titrimetry
What is ASTM E738?
What is the Scope of ASTM E738?
The ASTM E738 test method is used for analyzing iron ore concentrates and agglomerates and is primarily intended to serve as a referee method for ensuring that compositional parameters are met.
ASTM E738 Testing Procedure and Requirements
The specimen should be conditioned at 105°C to 110°C. A mixed flux of sodium carbonate and sodium peroxide is employed to fuse the sample in a zirconium crucible. The fused mass is dissolved in HCl. R2O3 hydroxides are precipitated with ammonia and treated with ethylenediamminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). EDTA is titrated with zinc solution, and aluminum is calculated.
ASTM E738 Analysis Results and Interpretation
Aluminum content can be calculated by using the following formula:
Aluminum% = 0.02698A/B
A = Zinc solution used in mg
B = sample used in g
