ASTM E536 provides test methods for the chemical analysis of zinc and zinc alloys. This method covers zinc and zinc alloys with chemical compositions within the following limitations, i.e., Aluminum (0.005 to 4.5), Cadmium (0.001 to 0.5), Copper (0.001 to 1.3), Iron (0.001 to 0.1), Lead (0.001 to 1.6), Magnesium (0.001 to 0.1), and Tin (0.001 to 0.1). The values are considered as a standard when expressed in SI units.
ASTM E536 Standard Test Methods for Chemical Analysis of Zinc and Zinc Alloys
What is ASTM E536?
What is the Scope of ASTM E536?
These test techniques for the chemical analysis of zinc metals and alloys are primarily designed to serve as reference procedures for determining whether materials meet compositional standards.
ASTM E536 Testing Procedure and Requirements
ASTM E536 testing procedure comprises Aluminum determination by ethylenediamminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) Titrimetric Method: Used for 0.5 to 4.5% concentrations, and Atomic Absorption Spectrometry: Used for analyzing aluminum, cadmium, copper, iron, lead, and magnesium.
For EDTA titration, the solution is buffered, and disodium (ethylenedinitrilo) tetraacetate (EDTA) is added after the material is dissolved in hydrochloric acid. Standard zinc solution is used to titrate the excess EDTA. The aluminum-EDTA complex is decomposed with sodium fluoride, and the liberated EDTA is titrated with normal zinc solution.

ASTM E536 Analysis Results and Interpretation
The percentage of aluminum is calculated as.
Aluminum, % = (AB/C) × 100
Where:
A = standard zinc solution used, mL
B = aluminum equivalent of the standard zinc solution, g/mL
C = sample represented in the aliquot, g
