ASTM E507 Standard Test Method for Determination of Aluminum in Iron Ores by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

    What is ASTM E507?

ASTM E507 is a standard test method for the determination of aluminum in iron ores, concentrates, and agglomerates using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (F-AAS). Aluminum is determined in such materials in a mass fraction (%) range from 0.1 to 5. The values are stated in SI units as they are considered standard units.

What is the Scope of ASTM E507?

ASTM E507 is used to determine aluminum content in iron ores using the F-AAS technique. It is considered a reference method for compliance with compositional specifications for impurity content.

    • Target Material: Iron ores, concentrates, and agglomerates.
    • Target Element: Aluminum (Al).
    • Concentration Range: Mass fraction from 0.1% to 5%.
    • Technique Used: Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS).
    • Purpose of the test: Acts as a referee method for compliance with compositional specifications regarding impurity content.
    • Safety and Units: Uses standard SI units and requires users to establish appropriate health, safety, and environmental practices.

ASTM E507 Testing Procedure and Requirements

The analytical sample shall be pulverized to pass a 150-μm sieve. The sample is first mixed in HCl and HNO3. Then it is evaporated and dehydrated so that any residue can be easily filtered, and then it is added into the main solution. The main solution is aspirated by the flame of a nitrous oxide-acetylene burner. The absorbed energy at the resonance line of the spectrum of aluminum is measured by atomic absorption spectrometry and compared with that of the calibration solutions.
