ASTM E422 is a standard test method for measuring steady net heat flux to a water-cooled surface using a system energy balance, primarily to calibrate high-temperature thermal environments. The measured heat flux is an important parameter for correlating material behavior.
ASTM E422 Standard Test Method for Measuring Net Heat Flux Using a Water-Cooled Calorimeter
What is ASTM E422?
What is the Scope of ASTM E422?
ASTM E422 is a standard test method for the measurement of steady heat flux to a given water-cooled surface by means of a system energy balance. The water-cooled calorimeter is one of many calorimeter concepts used to measure heat flux. This test method quantifies heat flow to a water-cooled surface to calibrate the thermal environment in which test specimens are evaluated. Specimen performance evaluated using this method is expressed in SI units.
However, according to ASTM E422, if the calorimeter and holder are the same size, shape, and surface finish as the test specimen, the observed heat flux to the calorimeter is assumed to be the same as that to the heated surface of the sample. One of the most essential metrics for correlating material behavior is the observed heat flux.
ASTM E422 Testing Procedure and Requirements
For the ASTM E422 test, the system is placed in a heat-source environment to ensure continuous water flow and constant inlet and outlet water temperatures. If the input and exhaust water temperatures, as well as the water flow rates, remain stable and do not change over time, the steady-state operation is assured. The inlet water temperature and flow rates are recorded after the calorimeter is removed from the environment so that they can be compared to the pretest values. Changes in water temperature between pre-and post-testing could suggest deposits on the calorimeter backface or cooling channels, which could affect the results of the energy transfer measurement. It is advised that measurements be repeated with the same apparatus to obtain consistent heat-flux results.

ASTM E422 Result Analysis and Interpretation
According to ASTM E422, the following steady-state data must be included when reporting the results of measurement tests:
- The active surface and guard ring dimensions of the calorimeter design.
- The flow rate of calorimeter coolant water.
- The temperature rise of calorimeter coolant water.
- Calculated heat flux.
