ASTM E411 Testing Procedure and Requirements
In the ASTM E411 test protocol, a sample containing traces of carbonyl compounds is combined with an acidic solution of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine to generate hydrazone, which, upon reacting with potassium hydroxide, produces a wine-red color, possibly due to a resonant quinoidal ion. The intensity of the red color is determined photometrically as a function of carbonyl concentration, and the amount of carbonyl is read directly from a previously produced calibration curve. This test approach relies on Lappin and Clark’s work.
