ASTM E372 Testing Procedure and Requirements
ASTM E372 is a standard test method for determining calcium and magnesium in magnesium ferrosilicon by EDTA titration. The testing procedure includes mainly: Calcium and magnesium by the ethylenediminetetraaceticacid (EDTA) titrimetric method. This test method covers the determination of magnesium in compositions from 2% to 12% and calcium in compositions from 0.25 % to 3.0%. All users of these test methods are presumed to be qualified analysts capable of completing common laboratory operations skillfully and securely.
To separate additional elements from calcium and magnesium, ammonium hydroxide precipitation is performed after dissolving the sample in nitric and hydrofluoric acids. After adding triethanolamine and potassium cyanide to hide residual residues of iron, copper, nickel, manganese, and aluminium that may be present, calcium and magnesium are titrated in separate aliquot parts. At pH 12, disodium EDTA) is used to titrate calcium. At pH 10.0, magnesium and calcium are titrated with EDTA, and the magnesium content is estimated by subtracting the volume of EDTA used to titrate the calcium.

where:
A = EDTA solution required to titrate the calcium
B = calcium equivalent of the EDTA solution
C = sample represented in the final aliquot
• The percentage of magnesium is calculated as follows:
Magnesium, % = [{D-(A/E)} × F}]/G x100
where:
A = EDTA solution required to titrate the calcium
D = EDTA solution required to titrate the magnesium and calcium
E = 50 divided by milliliters of aliquot taken for titration of magnesium and calcium F = magnesium equivalent of the EDTA solution
G = sample represented in the final aliquot, mg.
