ASTM D785 Test Method for Rockwell Hardness of Plastics and Electrical Insulating Materials

ASTM D785 covers two techniques for using a Rockwell hardness tester to measure the indentation hardness of plastics and related plastic electrical insulating materials. The hardness values can be used for material comparison, quality assurance, and selection, as well as to predict how a material will act in certain scenarios.

Introduction to ASTM D785

ASTM D785 test evaluates a material’s resistance to indentation or penetration by a certain indenter while under stress. The hardness values can be used for material comparison, quality assurance, and selection, as well as to predict how a material will act in certain scenarios. ASTM D785 test method offers a rapid and non-destructive way to assess hardness.

ASTM D785 Test Method

ASTM D785 describes the process for performing the Rockwell hardness test on plastics and electrical insulating materials as follows:

Procedure AThe capstan screw is turned until the small pointer is at a zero position and the large pointer is within 65 divisions of B 30. A minor load of 10 kg is applied without shock and removed 15 (+1, -0) seconds later. The Rockwell hardness on the red scale is read to the nearest full-scale division 15 s.
Procedure BBy placing a soft copper block on the anvil, raising it to the 12.7 mm indenter, and applying the primary load by tripping, one can calculate the vertical distance of indentation as well as the spring tension of the machine frame and elastic compressive deformation using the dial gauge.

ASTM D785 Specimens

Specimen detailsASTM D785 specimen is in the form of a flat plate, rod, or any other shape piece cut from a molding or sheet having parallel flat surfaces for proper seating on the anvil.
Specimen dimensionsThe minimum thickness, size, area, and width of a specimen should be 6 mm (1/4 in.), 25 mm (1 in.) square, and 6 cm2, respectively.
Specimen preparationCutting tools and machining techniques are used to create the desired shape.

ASTM D785 Results

Procedure A yields the indentation of the specimen remaining 15 s after a major load is released, while Procedure B yields the indentation of the indenter into the specimen after a 15-s application of the major load. Each Rockwell scale division represents 0.002-mm vertical movement of the indenter.

Tests Related to ASTM D785

ASTM D785 is related to standards such as ASTM D618 for conditioning plastics, ASTM D2240 test method for rubber property, and ASTM E 18 for rockwell hardness and rockwell superficial hardness of metallic materials.
