    Introduction to ASTM D6731

    ASTM D6731 is a standard method to test aerobic biodegradation of lubricants using soil. It is intended to test how lubricants, such as hydraulic, engine, and greases, decompose in an aerobic, microbial soil environment. This approach models land-based situations, such as spills, leaks, or land application. 

    ASTM D6731 Test Method 

    Test procedure The lubricant or its components are tested in a laboratory line with activated sludge from communal sewage works. The oxygen consumption in the respirometer is monitored during the course of the experiment to determine the biodegradability of the lubricant. Compounds that exhibit a moderate degree of biodegradation are characterised as inherently biodegradable in the majority of aquatic environments.

    Specimen DetailsThe container is a sealed container and includes a CO₂ capturing device that consists of an alkaline solution that absorbs CO₂ generated by biodegradation. Temperature is maintained at ambient temperature, between 20 and 28 degrees Celsius, and moisture levels are adjusted to ensure good microbial activity.

    ASTM D6731 Results and Interpretation

    At the end of this test, the percentage of theoretical CO₂ generated from the complete degradation of the lubricant sample is determined. 60% CO₂ release during the testing period signifies that the substance is readily biodegradable in soil.  More than 20% indicates that the lubricant is not easily biodegradable and could remain in the environment for an extended period. This test assesses both the lubricant’s chemical makeup and its availability for biological breakdown in soil.
