ASTM D2919 Determining Durability of Adhesive Joints Stressed in Shear by Tension Loading

    What is ASTM D2919?

ASTM D2919 is a standard test technique for measuring the durability of adhesive lap-shear joints subjected to tension loading and stress in shear. This test method can be utilized as an accelerated screening test for determining the adhesive joint’s durability. It can be used to assess the durability of adhesive joints exposed to the elements or to the circumstances that adhesive joints face in service. The ASTM D2919 (Standard Test Method for Determining Durability of Adhesive Joints Stressed in Shear by Tension Loading) test can also be used to see how different surface preparations or substrates affect adhesive joint durability and to examine the durability of different adhesives under controlled conditions.

    ASTM D2919 Sample Preparation Guide

Good-quality lap-shear joints are used as the test specimens for the ASTM D2919 test procedure. The stressed test specimens are exposed to the environment in a way that allows the environment’s condensate to drain effectively. Periodic observations of their state are made, and the time to failure for each test specimen is recorded, as described in ASTM D2919.

What are the Testing Procedure and Requirements?

Six specimens are tested to destruction according to the ASTM D2919 test procedure at 23°C and 50% relative humidity after conditioning in this environment for at least 40 hours. The maximum, minimum, and average failing stress values are recorded. In each test environment, a minimum of six test specimens are placed in test fixtures. After ensuring that the safety endplate shields are securely in place, each assembled test fixture is put in the loading machine, supported by the loading base, and approximately 1% of the target stress is given to the springs. The grip bolts are tightened to a torque of 0.45 to 0.56 N-m, and then the remaining load is applied. The machine discharges the applied load, and the loaded fixture is withdrawn.

    Analysis Results and Interpretation

ASTM D2919 is a standard test technique for measuring the durability of adhesive lap-shear joints subjected to tension loading and stress in shear. According to ASTM D2919, for certain end uses, only one set of test conditions may be sufficient to generate the required durability results.
