ASTM D2794 Resistance of Organic Coatings to the Effects of Rapid Deformation
ASTM D2794 is a test method that determines the impact of rapid deformation on the resistance of organic coatings.
GET STARTED
Introduction to ASTM D2794
ASTM D2794 is a test method designed to cover the procedure of rapidly deforming by the impact of a coating film and measures the effect of the deformation caused. The testing is preferred to be conducted in only one laboratory and the final results of the method are expressed in inch-pound units. The results obtained are specially used for quality control and specification purposes.
ASTM D2794 test method is generally applicable to organic compounds and aids in the performance evaluation of the coatings by checking their ability to resist the cracking caused by impacts.
ASTM D2794 Test Method
This test method proceeds with placing the organic coatings under study on thin metal plates. After the coatings have cured, a standard weight is applied that deforms the coating and the substrate. There can be either an intrusion or an extrusion indentation. The distance is increased in order to detect the point of failure and the weight drops with the increase in distance. The point of failure is noted by the use of a magnifier and the application of a copper sulfate solution on steel. A pinhole detector can also serve the purpose of detecting failure by cracking.
Placement of specimen
The punch is installed and the test panel is placed in the apparatus. The indenter is made to be in contact with the top surface of the panel. The weight is placed on the indenter and the guide tube is adjusted such that the lifting pin is at the zero mark. The weight is raised to the height where it is expected to cause no failure. The weight is then dropped on the indenter.
Observation of Cracks
The test panel is removed from the apparatus and observed for the cracks in the coating. In case of no cracks, the procedure is repeated with a greater height. In case of cracks, the impacted area of cracking is observed by using a magnifier. The value where the results change from mainly passing to mainly failing is the impact failure endpoint.
ASTM D2794 Specimens
Specimen details
ASTM D2794 specimens must be solid and uniformly rectangular. The uniform coatings of the material treated with conversion coating are used.
Specimen dimensions
The general sample size for ASTM D2794 is 24-gage (0.025 in. or 0.63 mm).
Specimen preparation
Specimens are injection molded or cut from molded or extruded sheets or plates. The coated panels are cured under the conditions of humidity and temperature before use.
ASTM D2794 Results
This test method determines the cracking failure, extrusion indentation, intrusion indentation, and impact failure. It also reports the inch-pound measurements at the impact failure endpoint and determines the resistance of organic coatings. The values of resistance are affected by the diameter of the punch, the thickness of the coating, the substrate, and the atmospheric conditions.
Tests related to ASTM D2794
ASTM G14 is similar to ASTM D2794. As per the ASTM G14 test method, we find the ability of a pipe coating to resist mechanical damage under specified conditions of impact from a falling weight.
