ASTM D2369 Volatile Content of Coatings

ASTM D2369 is a standard test method used to determine the volatile content of coatings. It provides a quantitative measure of the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in a coating material.

Introduction to ASTM D2369

ASTM D2369 is widely used in the coating industry to assess the volatile content of various types of coatings, including paints, varnishes, lacquers, and related products. The test method involves heating a representative sample of the coating under controlled conditions to evaporate the volatile components, and then measuring the weight loss to calculate the volatile content as a percentage of the total coating.

ASTM D2369 test method is useful for qualitative characterization, research, development, and specification purposes.

ASTM D2369 Test Method

A representative sample of the coating material is collected in a container that can withstand the heating process. The sample is carefully weighed to determine the initial weight (W1). The ASTM D2369 test method involves the following steps:

Heating ProcessThe sample container is placed in an oven or heating apparatus set to a specific temperature (commonly 110 ± 5°C). The sample is heated for a defined period of time (typically 60 minutes) to allow the volatile components to evaporate.  During the heating process, any ventilation or exhaust system is used to ensure the removal of evaporated materials.
Weighing ProcessAfter the heating period, the sample container is removed from the oven and allowed to cool in a desiccator. Once cooled, the sample container is weighed again to determine the final weight (W2).
Calculation of Volatile ContentThe volatile content of the coating is calculated using the following formula:     Volatile Content (%) = [(W1 – W2) / W1] × 100

ASTM D2369 Specimens

Specimen detailsASTM D2369 specimens are coatings in liquid or solid form, such as paint, varnish, or lacquer.
Specimen dimensionsThe general sample size for ASTM D2369 varies depending on the specific requirements of the specimen and the intended application.
Specimen preparationSpecimens are injection molded or cut from molded or extruded sheets or plates.

ASTM D2369 Results

The test method ASTM D2369 provides information on the volatile content of the coating material. These results are used for various purposes such as regulatory compliance, quality control, and environmental considerations of coatings.
