ASTM C675 Standard Test Method for Alkali Resistance of Ceramic Decorations

ASTM C675 describes the determination of the alkali resistance of ceramic labels (or ACL (Applied Color Label) on returnable beverage bottles or ware to ensure the required durability of the label. This ware is cleaned and sanitized in hot alkali solutions by several states. To ensure that the ACL will survive the anticipated number of washings and will have acceptable ware identification and appearance, accelerated tests are needed.

    ASTM C675 Introduction

The destruction of ACL in the alkali solutions occurs at about the same time as label thickness. A good alkali-resistant enamel will be a thin coating and will fail in a short time, and an extremely heavy coating of a poor alkali-resistant enamel will look reasonably good. A qualitative procedure is described. Each laboratory or plant using this procedure should establish its standards.

    ASTM C675 Test Method

Placing glassware in an alkali solutionThe test ware is placed in the alkali solution for 2 hours after the alkali solution has come to equilibrium temperature (88°C ± 1°C) for ASTM C675. After 2 hours, the test ware is removed, rinsed, wiped, and dried. It is observed that decoration removal occurs.
Repetition of processThe same procedure is used after recording observation of the attack and repeating until the decoration is 90% removed. The 90% destruction test ends when there is not enough label to use for bare identification. The test period must be 3-4 hours for the ACL. Hours to 90% destruction is the result.

Specimen SizeASTM C675 test specimens should have their bottoms removed.

    ASTM C675 Results and Interpretation

Durability and visual integrity of the Applied Color Labels (ACLs) after exposure to alkali solutions are evaluated through ASTM C675 results. The main criterion is to see if the labels stay the same color, legible, and stay on the product after the specified number of wash cycles. Poor resistance to alkali is evidenced by any type of deterioration. This ensures that the labels will stand up to the harsh cleaning and sanitizing processes that are often required in most states.

    Tests Related to ASTM C675

ASTM C675 is related to tests including ASTM D7705 for fiber-based polymers, and ASTM C1203 for determining the base resistance of glass enamel.

Use of ASTM C675 Testing in Various Industries

ASTM C675 testing is used for industries including beverage packaging, food and beverage, and manufacturing of returnable containers. It provides the durability of Applied Color Labels (ACLs) on beverage bottles in terms of their resistance to cleaning solutions containing alkali. It is important to do so to ensure that labels maintain visual integrity during repeated wash cycles, which are usual in the beverage industry.

Materials Commonly Tested with ASTM C675

ASTM C675 materials include Applied Color Labels (ACL) used on returnable beverage bottles. To evaluate the extent to which these labels resist alkali attack in hot alkali solutions, this test was designed specifically. In addition, the test can be applied to other ceramic glazes used in labeling applications on glass or other ceramic containers that may be exposed to such conditions.

Safety and Best Practices in ASTM C675 Testing

ASTM C675 testing safety and best practices center on the integrity of the testing environment and personnel while ensuring accurate and reliable results. Such risk can be avoided with the key practice of wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and safety glasses. Testing may involve handling cleaning agents or chemicals that must be kept away from your skin and used in a manner that runs no risk of inhalation of fumes.

    Importance of ASTM C675

ASTM C675 is key in determining the durability and performance of ceramic labels (ACLs) placed on returnable beverage bottles. This standard test method confirms that the labels are resistant to the rough conditions of cleaning and sanitizing processes which usually incorporate hot alkali washing. In industries such as beverage packaging, where labels are repeatedly washed and must maintain their ability to clearly and durably identify, it is especially important.
