Introduction to Surface Plate

A surface plate is defined as a simple but crucial in the context of accuracy measurement and testing tool in manufacturing engineering. Usually made from granite, cast iron, or glass, surface plates are flat working reference surfaces used in establishing the flatness and accuracy of a part. These are for example calibration, setup, and quality control, making the machining and assembly processes for many industries accurate and precise.

Instrumentation of Surface Plate

Several accessories and equipment are employed to facilitate the use of the surface plate, with the overall aim of achieving correct measurements and evaluations. Conventionally, a precision level is employed to determine the flatness of the very surface plate in question, for example, to confirm that it has been correctly set up. The dimensions of components placed on the plate are measured using dial indicators and height gauges. Gage blocks are used to establish the accuracy of the Surface plate while on the other hand categories such as caliper and micrometres are used for measurements of dimensions.

Strengths and Limitations of Surface Plate

Strengths

• Surface plate offers a stable and fairly levelled plane on which measurements can be made with maximum accuracy.
• Improvements in the accuracy of performing inspection and calibration of components
• Materials include granite, a durable surface that will not get easily scratched or worn.

Limitations 

• Although surface plates are readily available, they can be very massive and cumbersome and must be well handled.
• The surface plate is vulnerable to either shock or abrasion by chemical substances.
• The measurements obtained typically, need to be calibrated regularly for further accuracy.
