ISO 9408 Ultimate Biodegradability Test – Oxygen Consumption

    Introduction to  ISO 9408

Organic chemicals in many industrial sectors are being used more and more, which brings some worries concerning the persistence of organic compounds in aquatic systems. It is essential to determine if microorganisms capable of degrading found organic chemicals can degrade them under environmental conditions to lessen potential long-term ecological consequences. ISO 9408 was established to develop a laboratory test of the biodegradability of organic chemicals, as a ‘ Readily biodegradable test method’. But ISO 9408 tests only under aerobic conditions, as this is common (natural water bodies and wastewater treatment systems). It helps identify a substance as readily biodegradable and is useful for regulatory and impact assessments on the environment.

    ISO 9408 Test Method

Test procedure This test is to check the biodegradability of a material by measuring oxygen consumption during biodegradation in a closed bottle system over 28 days (with headspace). The degradation percentage is calculated afterwards as a percentage of oxygen consumption to the theoretical oxygen demand (ThOD)
Test sample preparation In this method, the concentration should be 100 mg/l of the test compound, but its theoretical oxygen demand (ThOD) should be at least 100 mg/l.

    ISO 9408 Results and Interpretation

The fundamental outcome from an ISO 9408 test is the amount of oxygen consumed by the microorganisms in the biodegradation process. This is regularly expressed as either the percentage of the theoretical oxygen demand (ThOD) or the amount of oxygen consumed by the amount of test compound.  The results allow the ultimate biodegradability of a substance to be determined, which relates to the conversion of the test compound to CO2 and other stable products in aerobic conditions, while accommodating for test conditions and time.

This is similar to the OECD 301 test series.

Use of ISO 9408 in Various Industries

Usually used by manufacturing, chemical, and wastewater management sectors

Materials Commonly Tested with ISO 9408

The test is suitable for materials that are highly soluble, poorly soluble, insoluble, volatile, involatile, and/or adsorbing.

    FAQ

Where can I get the iso 9408 tested?
You can share your iso 9408 testing requirements with MaTestLab. MaTestLab has a vast network of material testing laboratories, spread across the USA and Canada. We support your all material testing needs ranging from specific iso 9408 test to various testing techniques.
Please contact us for a detailed quote for your iso 9408 testing needs. Cost incurred to carry out different iso 9408 testing methodology depends on the type of raw material; number of samples, coupons, or specimens; test conditions, turn around time etc. Costs of some ASTM testing methods start from $100 and the final value depends upon the factors listed above. Please contact us for the best and latest prices.
The required number of samples or specimens should comply with the procedure given in the iso 9408 standard. However, the MaTestLab operations team can assist you for your special requirements once you share your testing details with us.
MaTestLab has a vast testing laboratory network, hence we bring you the best testing facilities in a cost-effective way. We offer considerable discounts (15-20%) to our returning customers based on test volume and frequency.
The turnaround time for iso 9408 test methodology depends upon the test procedure mentioned in the standard test document. However, we at MaTestLab understand your research requirements and hence try to get your test completed within the least possible time.
