ISO 11734 is a standardized international test method for determining the anaerobic biodegradability of organic materials in an environment with no oxygen (methanogenic atmosphere). It mimics the anoxic digester environments (like those where anaerobic treatment processes and biogas plants operate). This approach may be applied to the determination of whether a particular substance could be metabolized to methane (CH₄), CO₂, and biomass without oxygen. Air Free Anaerobic Degradation is key to the behaviour assessment of compounds discharged into sludge treatment systems or landfills (biogas production)
ISO 11734 Test Method
| Test procedure | In this setup, the material is contained in a sealed container with washed-down, digested anaerobic sludge. The rise in headspace pressure of the test vessels as a result of degradation and subsequent production of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) is measured during degradation. |
