Introduction to HIPS Plastic

High-impact polystyrene or HIPS for short is a synthetic and scientifically engineered thermoplastic material with great flexibility and is very cost-effective. The molecular structure of HIPS is made from monomers of polybutadiene and polystyrene. HIPS is used so often because of many useful characteristics, such as relatively low density, very good impact strength, and ease of processing. It can also be combined with other materials, to improve its characteristics, which allow for variations in construction and development.

Instrumentation of HIPS Plastic

Equipment used in HIPS includes extruders that are utilized to produce the HIPS, injection molding equipment is used to develop the material’s shape, and temperature regulators are used to process the HIPS. Additional related tools include spectroscopic equipment for composition analysis and viscometers for viscosity inspection. Tensile strength is one of the factors that are tested in mechanical testing.

Strengths and Limitations of HIPS Plastic

Strengths

• HIPS, due to its high impact strength and toughness, is suitable for use in areas where impact stresses tend to be very high.
• The items deteriorate slowly due to the high dimensional stability and low moisture content. 
• Highly cost-effective and economically viable 
• May be mixed with other materials and solvents to improve attributes such as hue and fiber strength. 

Limitations 

• The material has rather low UV light resistivity, which means that in outdoor applications the material or the products made of it may degrade.
• Not as heat tolerant as some other plastics due to this then it cannot be used in high-temperature applications.
• It is never as chemically resistant as other materials because it is easily soluble in certain solvents.
