What is ASTM D523?
ASTM D523 is the standard test method for Specular Gloss. The test measures how much light is reflected from the surface at specified angles, commonly 20⁰, 60⁰, and 85⁰. ASTM D523 specifies three gloss-measurement geometries: 20⁰, 60⁰, and 85⁰. The appropriate geometry is selected according to the gloss level of the surface under evaluation. The 60⁰ geometry is generally used as the reference or general-purpose geometry, while the 20⁰ geometry provides greater resolution for high-gloss surfaces and the 85⁰ geometry provides greater resolution for low-gloss surfaces.
How Was the ASTM D523 Test performed?
- Initial Sample Set: We initially received six samples for testing, comprising five golf putter heads in different colors and one complete putter. One additional putter head was subsequently received, bringing the total number of samples tested to seven.
- Gloss measurement: The client had marked the specific locations on each sample for gloss measurement, and testing was performed at these designated locations except for the complete putter, in accordance with ASTM D523.
What Were the Analysis Challenges and How Did We Solve It?
Analysis Challenge: Gloss measurement requires a sufficiently flat and wide surface to obtain reliable readings at multiple angles—20°, 60°, and 85°. The client-marked locations on the head models provided adequate surface area for testing. However, the corresponding location on the complete putter sample lacked a flat surface for reliable measurements.
How We Solved It: We identified an alternative location on the complete putter sample with adequate surface area and a more suitable profile for measurement. We discussed and agreed on the proposed location with the client, after which we successfully performed the gloss measurements at the required angles.
Conclusions and Discussions:
After identifying and confirming a suitable measurement location, testing was performed using a consistent procedure across the head models and the complete putter sample. This ensured that the measurements at each gloss angle were reliable, repeatable, and suitable for comparison across samples and color variants.
At each angle, we took three readings and averaged them for the head model and complete putter. Among the head model color variants tested, some samples showed high gloss values at all measurement angles, while others showed low gloss levels. The complete putter showed consistently low gloss values across all angles.
FAQs
- On what types of materials can gloss measurement be done?
– Measurement of surface gloss can be done for paints, coatings, plastics, metals, glass, ceramics, paper, films, wood, automotive components, and other smooth or coated surfaces using standard gloss geometries. - How should samples be prepared for gloss testing?
– The sample should be sufficiently flat and large enough for the instrument’s measurement area. - What standard is applicable for gloss measurement?
– ASTM D523 and ISO 2813. The appropriate standard should be selected based on the client’s product and specification. - What equipment is used for the analysis?
– BYK Gardner Glossmeter #3, model number 4430 - What is the cost of ASTM D523 testing?
- The cost for ASTM D523 testing at multiple gloss angles (20°, 60°, and 85°) is ~$400 per sample (please note that pricing is subject to change based on the sample material, project scope, and testing requirements).
- What is the turnaround time for testing?
The estimated turnaround time for this test is 2 weeks; however, we offer expedited services for a rush fee, if applicable.
