The OECD 301B biodegradability evaluation focuses on measuring the rate of biodegradation of a chemical in a water aerated environment, based on the amount of CO2 produced. The OECD 301B biodegradability evaluation is intended to measure whether or not a chemical has a likelihood of being biodegradable, not to determine the rate of biodegradation in water aerated conditions. This evaluation follows the same principles under a test substance to test microorganisms, monitors the mineralization phase, and measures CO2 evolution relative to a reference substance. The evaluation is designed to develop information relating to the likelihood of chemical biodegradation in the environment. Studies have also demonstrated the ecological safety of the chemical.

    OECD 301B Introduction

    The OECD 301B test is part of the OECD 301 test series, which is designed to measure the aerobic biodegradation or readiness for biodegradation of a chemical substance, where the substance is placed in a closed system containing a microbial inoculum, and the loss of the substance is measured through the production of CO2. This method uses respirometry to measure a material´s ability to biodegrade based on the measurement of CO2 production in a liquid medium for at least 28 days.

    Test procedure In this test the aerobic biodegradability is analysed using respirometry and the amount of CO2 emission is determined after an incubation period of 28 days in the closed vessels.

    Specimen DetailsThe concentration of the test substance must be around 10-20 mg carbon/L, with the temperature of 22 ± 2℃ and pH between 6-8. 

    OECD 301B Results and Interpretation

    At the end of the incubation period of 28 days the  percentage CO2 evolved in the vessels is determined. And depending on the emission, the ready biodegradability of the sample is analysed. Usually 60% CO2 emission in an 8-10 days window is considered readily biodegradable.
