ASTM E680 Standard Test Method for Drop Weight Impact Sensitivity of Solid-Phase Hazardous Materials

    What is ASTM E680?

ASTM E680 is a standard test method used to assess the sensitivity of solid-phase hazardous compounds to drop-weight impact stimuli.

What is the Scope of ASTM E680?

This ASTM E680 test method applies to testing that establishes a relative sensitivity scale for hazardous materials. This test is also important in testing process thickness samples. The normalized H50 results help assess vulnerabilities related to the manufacture, transportation, storage, and use of hazardous materials.

ASTM E680 Testing Procedure and Requirements

Sample conditioning and certain test processes are implemented to reduce humidity effects, and materials are dried and placed in an airtight container. The mass of the drop weight should be between 1.0 and 3.5 kg.  Samples must be dried for 2 h at 90 °C. There are limitations on the impact tool masses and striking surface diameters that can be utilized, and all tests can employ a standard sample thickness. There are also processes for sample preparation and treatment, as well as procedures for detecting reactions using the human senses. The well-known Bruceton up-and-down method can be used to conduct drop-weight impact tests. Through the outlined method, data is standardized and obtained by various impact devices.

ASTM E680 Analysis Results and Interpretation

The test results report the relative sensitivities of solid-phase hazardous materials to drop-weight impact stimulus. The normalized data measure the relative sensitivities of hazardous sample materials at the 50% probability of reaction level. The normalized H50 values may be used with additional data for other probability-of-reaction levels (not portion of this test method) to evaluate hazards associated with the manufacture, transportation, storage, and use of hazardous materials.
