ASTM D7777 is the standard that provides the standard process to do these measurements to make results comparable and reproducible between labs or when the samplings are done both in the field and labs. The density, relative density, and API gravity are the parameters used in the petroleum industry, which affect product quality, classification, and commercial value. Hydrometers and pycnometers traditionally measure these properties, but currently, by smaller portable electronic density meters, which are based on the oscillating U-tube technology. The test procedure enhances more effective product tracking in production, storage, and distribution.
ASTM D7777 Test Method
| Instrument Preparation | Calibrate the portable digital density meter according to manufacturer’s instructions using certified reference standards. Ensure proper temperature control. |
| Sample Introduction | Introduce the petroleum sample carefully into the measuring cell, avoiding air bubbles or impurities. |
| Measurement | The density meter oscillates with a U-tube containing the sample, and the frequency of oscillation is measured to determine density. |
| Temperature Recording | The instrument simultaneously records the temperature of the sample to allow accurate density corrections. |
| Calculation | The device automatically calculates density, relative density, or API gravity based on the oscillation frequency and temperature. |
