Deep foundations should meet high structural integrity to ensure critical infrastructure is safe. This need was fulfilled by ASTM D6760, which provided an elaborate process for an internal quality assessment method, cross-hole sonic logging (CSL), involving the transmission of ultrasonic waves. Pipes fitted during pile pouring permitted lowering of the transmitters and receivers into the piles to be scanned acoustically. The speed, magnitude, and temperatures of the received data pointed towards discrepancies in concrete quality. This method was particularly useful in identifying the flaws in accessible areas, which could not have been determined without it, to prove that appropriate placement was being carried out and avoid structural failures in the future.
