Packaging is an important part of the supply chain, especially for liquid items, which have to be shipped and stored in a safe manner. ASTM D5094 described methods for testing for gross leakage in containers with threaded or lug-style closures. These closures are commonly applied across the food, chemical, pharmaceutical, and household goods industries. The standard gave assurance that containers were sealed correctly and leak-resistant under standard handling and storage conditions. Although withdrawn in 2023, it laid the basis for better methods of packaging validation that are ongoing today.
