Plastics that persist in aquatic systems (freshwater, estuarine, or marine) are not so environmentally friendly for many years, if they are not biodegradable. By providing a standard and reproducible test method with a specified microbial population to measure the environmental impacts of non-biodegradable plastic, ISO 23977-2 in part helps to globally understand. This is very important when any kind of data needs to be repeatable, for instance, when you compare products, certification material, or in the case of regulatory testing.
ISO 23977-2 Test Method
The test has two testing conditions: 1. Closed respirometer, 2. Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) test
| Test procedure for the Closed respirometer | A closed respirometer is used to measure oxygen consumption during the biodegradation process. |
| Test procedure for BOD | BOD is measured by either maintaining a constant gas volume or by measuring changes in volume or pressure. |
| Sample preparation | The sample size is not fixed for this test. |
